If you're on a budget or just don't have the time to track down older games, here are some other ways to get into retro gaming:
Several video game companies have released new versions of their old consoles, including the NES Classic, SNES Classic, and the Sony Playstation Classic to name a few.
These systems are much smaller in size compared to their original counterparts and usually fit in the palm of your hand. They come with a “greatest hits” collection of pre-downloaded games, usually about 30 or so. This may be a convenient and cheaper alternative to buying the original games, but it still limits your game library. Although these systems have admittedly impressive collections for new retro gamers to enjoy, new players will be missing out on some of the more obscure titles that these consoles had to offer.
With that being said, re-released consoles have their advantages, most notably the ability to play previously unobtainable games. The SNES Classic Edition, for instance, included Star Fox 2, a game that was never released on the original Super Nintendo. It's a great (and cheap!) way to play the best of retro gaming.
Some companies have released third-party consoles that are compatible with older game cartridges. Hyperkin, for instance, is known for their line of re-released controllers and Retron systems. The quality of these consoles vary from company to company, so be sure to do your research when considering this option. Depending on the model you buy, some consoles are compatible with multiple systems. This option provides an affordable alternative to hunting down each individual console.
Long before the release of the classic edition consoles, older video game companies such as Namco, Atari, and Sega released compilation games on more contemporary consoles. This is the best possible way to play these sorts of games without having to spend thousands of dollars on arcade cabinets. In some cases, however, you won’t always have a perfect port of the original game. Most compilations of home console releases, such as a collection of Sega Genesis games, are a great way for modern gamers to experience the classics.
